The healing power of oxygen (opinion) Friday, June 01, 2012 by: Hesh Goldstein Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/036035_oxygen_health_Earth.html#ixzz29T5EmJJJ

The healing power of oxygen (opinion) Friday, June 01, 2012 by: Hesh Goldstein 212 (NaturalNews) There is no more precious element on the face of the earth more essential to life itself than oxygen. In addition to being the third most abundant element found in the sun and making up 20% of the earth's atmosphere, oxygen plays a critical role in the carbon-nitrogen cycle, which is said to give the sun and stars their energy, and it comprises 65% of our body. We know, that through fasting, we can live a few days without water and a few weeks without food, but only a few minutes without oxygen. Because all the functions in our body are regulated by oxygen it must be replaced endlessly because 90% of our life energy depends upon it. Our cells are energized by oxygen for regeneration and oxygen is required for food motabilization and the elimination of toxins and waste through the process of oxidation. The computers in our heads, called a brain, need oxygen continually to process information and for our organs to function efficiently they need tons of oxygen. Basically, what we take for granted like thinking, moving, eating, sleeping, feeling and talking are entirely dependant on oxygen for the energy to facilitate those processes. In fact, oxygen is the only element that is capable of combining with just about every other element to basically build and maintain our bodies. For example, to form proteins we combine oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen. To form carbohydrates we combine oxygen, carbon and hydrogen and to form water we combine oxygen and hydrogen. To put it another way, without oxygen there would be no life. Because of the industrial revolution, technological advancements and modern transportation, oxygen in most parts of the world is steadily decreasing. We are obsessed with carbon-based fuels to power engines and generators and this uses huge amounts of oxygen on a daily basis. Add to that our rapid deforestation to produce wood and paper well beyond our production capacity and it's oxygen that takes the hit. What has been found is that the oxygen content in our atmosphere is being reduced by about 0.8% every 15 years. Because our bodies are not designed for low-level oxygen consumption, we open the door for our bodies to take on more and more toxins that accumulate in our cells, bloodstreams, tissues and organs. With global warming so prominent and on everyone's mind about the oxygen content in our atmosphere being reduced, it would be well to know that if our oxygen level reaches 6%, we die. Oxygen, being one of five elements to sustain life, has been used in a myriad of ways to heal. It is used to treat the sick and injured, it treats bone infections, wounds, carbon-monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness and now the sports field has opened its eyes to increasing oxygen levels to treat athletes. If we adhere to eating poorly or abuse our bodies by excess drinking or smoking or doing drugs, both recreational and medicinal, and fail to recognize the importance of exercise, this has a ripple effect to our immune system, which becomes weakened and causes us to be prone to sickness and disease. Adding insult to injury, low oxygen levels are not good because they affect our cell's metabolism, which brings about more adverse health problems like lack of vitality and stamina, resulting in endless fatigue and a generally weak disposition. Other factors can reduce our oxygen levels as well. There's toxic stress as a result of toxic chemicals and air pollution becoming more prevalent and our increased use of antibiotics. Emotional stress produces adrenaline and adrenal-related hormones, which in turn use more oxygen. Physical traumas reduce circulation and oxygen supply to the cells and tissues of the body. And then, infections deplete our store of oxygen to fight bacteria and viruses and then we turn to frequent drug use to solve the problem, but the drugs wind up using our cellular oxygen levels as well. Problems like Candida and fungal infections are easily reversed through increasing oxygen levels in the cells. So, reversing the shortage of oxygen in the body is your starting point to rebuilding and strengthening your immune system. Oxygen deficiency presents itself in many ways - cancer, leukemia, AIDS, seizures and nerve deterioration to name a few. Bear in mind that cancer cells cannot live in an aerobic or oxygenated environment and it is your increased oxygen levels that keep illness at bay. If you feel weak, are easily fatigued, have poor circulation and digestion, muscle aches or dizziness, are moody, have a poor memory, behave irrationally, are easily irritable, have an acid stomach or bronchial problems, you most likely suffer from depleted oxygen levels. When your immune system is compromised by a lack of oxygen, you are more susceptible to bacterial, viral, other infections, colds and flu. As previously stated, oxygen-deficient blood presents itself with a variety of metabolic disorders, most recognizable by excess uric acid, putting your body in an acidic rather than an alkaline environment. Oh yeah, oxygen will protect you against unfriendly bacteria and toxins and will carry them out of your system. There are a variety of forms of oxygen therapy. Some expensive, some reasonable. Bottled oxygen, which is usually an inhalation therapy geared to serious bronchial and other respiratory problems, is costly and inconvenient. Ozone (O3) therapy is generally given up the butt (ugh!) or intravenously (ouch!) is primarily used to increase blood oxygenation, circulation, immunity, and to kill bacteria, viruses and fungi. The problem? It's a hassle, inconvenient, unstable and can be toxic if not administered properly Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) therapy is somewhat controversial because it might cause an adverse reaction in the digestive tract due to the fact that excess hydrogen causes an unbalanced pH and can bring about unwanted free radicals. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing oxygen in a pressurized chamber, saturating the cells and tissues with oxygen. It's great if you're a diver and have to overcome decompression sickness. Breathing exercises will increase lung capacity. Regular exercise, hatha yoga classes and martial arts are great for deep diaphragmatic and controlled breathing. Organic sulfur crystals are the easiest, least inconvenient, and work the best. Bear in mind that all commercial MSM products do not work. They start as a crystal, are turned into powder, losing 85% of their effectiveness, and when the synthetic binding and anti-caking agents are added, it becomes useless. One final word: during the day the body loses approximately three quarts of water through breathing, sweating and elimination. If you work out heavily on a hot day, you can lose three quarts of water in an hour. If you do not replace the water lost, hello muscle cramps, dehydration or heat stroke. The rule of thumb: one half of your body weight in fluid ounces - you weigh 150 pounds X ? = 75 ounces or at least ? gallon a day. Oh yeah, one more thing - liquid means good unfluoridated water, not coffee, tea, alcohol, fruit juices or sport drinks loaded with sugar. It is the water and the water only that keeps your skin moist and supple and acts as a natural lubricant for your joints and internal organs. Aloha! 90% of the body's energy comes from Oxygen. Only 10% from food and water.

The chemical basis of energy production in the body is a chemical called Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). If something goes wrong with the production of ATP, the result is lowered vitality. Oxygen is the most critical for the production of ATP.
Oxygen is the most important factor in the body's metabolism. When we eat a poor diet with foods that are high in fat, carbohydrates, sugar, and alcohol, our bodies have to use more oxygen to digest, assimilate, decompose and eventually expel them.
A common outward symptom is the food coma, the feeling of mid-afternoon lethargy. The brain is deprived of its normal ration of oxygen, and fatigue sets in. We yawn to get more oxygen to the brain.
Oxygen4Energy  contains no caffeine, no sugar or any other unnatural stimulants. It does not provide a superficial jolt to the central nervous system like energy drinks. It give you a healthy energy BOOST to help return your body and mind to equilibrium.

STRESS

What is Stress? We know it when we feel it, and it can be debilitating. Stress is generally caused by 4 factors: (1) Emotional stress (2) Physical trauma or damage (3) Toxic chemical stress (4) Infection by pathogens.
All forms of stress cause an acceleration of oxygen deficiency in the body. Headaches, muscle tension, depression, increased heart rate and heavy breathing are all noticeable signs of immediate stress. Prolonged stress is malicious to the entire body and can cause a multitude of sicknesses and diseases.

Colleges such as the University of Rhode Island provided their students with free oxygen bars during Finals specifically to help them cope with the stress.
Yoga practitioners are committed to the value of proper breathing and oxygen intake to remove the stress from the body, help keep muscles loose, and promote total body and mind health.
Oxygen4Energy Just flat Out  works.

The Healing Power of Oxygen

The air we breathe contains 21 percent oxygen. During hyperbaric therapy, the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen at greater than normal atmospheric pressure.
While providing 100 percent oxygen through a facemask has certain benefits, providing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber delivers even greater benefits. Hyperbaric therapy works by increasing oxygen carried in the blood stream – not by the oxygen having direct contact with the skin or wounds. Hyperbaric therapy has been proven to:
  • Promote blood vessel formation
  • Enhance wound healing
  • Improve infection control
  • Preserve damaged tissues
  • Eliminate and reduce effects from toxic substances
  • Reduce or eliminate tissue and blood flow obstruction by gas bubbles
For a patient with a problem wound, increasing blood oxygen levels promotes healing. For a victim of smoke inhalation, the extra oxygen can rapidly reverse the toxic effects of poisonous carbon monoxide.
Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are normally painless. The patient lies comfortably and restfully in an enclosed plastic acrylic chamber. You can watch TV, listen to music or even sleep. Side effects are limited, with the most commonly reported including light-headedness or popping in the ears.

JET LAG

Many upscale European Hotels such as the The Intercontinental, Moevenpick, Radisson and Sheraton stock canned Oxygen in their guest rooms for on-the-go executive travelers and vacationers who need to recover from the effects of jet lag. Upscale Japanese hotels offer Oxygen Bar treatments to directly alleviate jet lag.
Commercial airlines pressurize their cabins equivalent to the pressure of 8,000 feet above sea level. There is 20% less oxygen at this pressure than normal. Extended travel under these conditions deprives the individual of their regular intake of Oxygen. Furthermore, there are many airborne contaminants in an airplane, and the body needs to use more of its oxygen reserves to eliminate these toxins.
Together with the stressful nature of flying and lack of proper sleep (when the body naturally re-oxygenates), jet lag occurs. Headaches, mental fatigue, muscle aches, inability to concentrate and lack of focus, and lethargy are all symptoms of oxygen deprivation. These side-effects can last for days!
The airplane manufacturing companies are spending hundreds of millions of dollars in the redesign of the hulls of their newest super-planes to address this very real concern of travel fatigue. The newest Boeing Dreamliner will be pressurized at the equivalent of 6,000 feet, while the Airbus A380 will be pressurized at 5,000 feet. These improvements are to directly address the ill effects suffered by air passengers due to Oxygen deprivation.
Oxygen4Energy  helps the body readjust naturally by simply helping to re-oxygenate it and helping to remove the harmful toxins from the blood. Business and Leisure travelers can now spend more time doing what they want and need to, and less time recovering and suffering from Jet Lag.

Fact On Taking Sport portable oxygen Read below !!!!

The sight of the professional football player inhaling oxygen on the sideline every weekend in the Fall is commonplace. Why do these finely tuned, world class athletes choose to use supplemental oxygen?
During times of strenuous physical activity, the body simply exhales more carbon dioxide than it admits in Oxygen. The body's response to maintain blood oxygen levels is to obviously breathe more heavily to increase Oxygen intake.
Muscle fatigue and cramping occur when glycogen in oxygen-starved blood turns into lactic acid. Adding oxygen to the blood inhibits the production of lactic acid, and helps decompose what is already produced.
Professional football players know it is important to be as fresh, alert and strong on the last play of the 4th quarter as it is on the 1st play of the game.
Medical studies past and present have shown that inhaling oxygen before and during physical activity enhances endurance performance and can cut down on recovery times.
Oxygen4Energy  is the perfect way to energize and optimize your workouts at the fitness center. It will help you overcome lethargy and help you achieve your peak performance. Try  Oxygen4Energy  during your favorite sport and gain that competitive advantage that the premier athletes enjoy.

Thank you for your time!

Take Your Recovery to a Completely New Level with this Age Old Nutrient

Arnold Schwarzenegger once described "the pump,” the feeling of your muscles filling up with oxygenated blood, as an experience superior to that of orgasm. While we won’t go so far as to validate those claims, the feeling you get at the end of a workout is undeniably euphoric. Your muscles swell up with blood, every contraction or extension aches and burns due to the lactic acid accumulation. You can literally feel your body beginning to repair itself and grow stronger.
One of the most critical components to sports training for ANY athlete is recovering after a workout. While it’s difficult to take a day off to let your body repair itself, it is absolutely vital in order to replenish your oxygen and glycogen stores and avoid overtraining. The process of breaking down your muscle fibers and then allowing them to rest is the only way to make them bigger and stronger.
During exercise, your blood vessels dilate and your heart rate increases to allow more oxygen-rich blood into your muscles. After a certain point, you reach your oxygen threshold and oxygen inhaled through the lungs simply cannot be supplied to your muscles fast enough. Your body begins to pull any remaining oxygen from your muscle cells to keep up, resulting in an oxygen debt. You have now consumed too much of your body’s available supply of oxygen and must begin to pay it back.
Because of the lack of oxygen, your muscles can no longer generate fresh ATP, your muscle’s primary fuel source, and lactic acid begins to accumulate in its place. Lactic acid is what causes you to feel the burning sensation towards the end of the workout. It causes each muscle contraction to feel like a major effort.
Once you start recovery, all of these things must be brought back to their equilibrium state. As you breathe, fresh oxygen enters the bloodstream and is pumped to the muscles to begin reconstructing the fibers that were broken down. With any recovery there are four things that must take place:
  1. ATP stores must be replenished
  2. Lactic acid must be metabolized
  3. Myoglobin (oxygen binding proteins found in muscle fibers) must be replenished with oxygen
  4. Glycogen levels must be restored
Your digestive system replenishes glycogen stores by turning food into sugar and storing it in your muscles. The oxygen supply that was robbed from your myoglobin must now be paid back through steady respiration or breathing. This new oxygen reacts with the glycogen in your muscles to create ATP. Fresh oxygen also metabolizes lactic acid in the kidneys and liver and converts it back to pyruvic acid which can again be broken down to release more ATP.
All of these recovery processes hinge on your oxygen intake. In fact, oxygen consumption is highest immediately after exercise, and gradually tapers off as you recover. This is because your body is trying to replace the oxygen that was used up during training. Studies have shown your oxygen consumption remains elevated up to 38 hours after exercise to help make up your oxygen debt.
With all things considered, OXYGEN is undeniably the most important factor in the recovery process. The ambient air around us is often less than 20% oxygen. When you consume concentrated supplemental oxygen, after a tough workout your recovery is supercharged since your oxygen intake is maximized.
Effective oxygen supplementation was once prohibitively expensive and limited to elite level athletes because it required a doctor's prescription and supervision. However, industry advances have made recreational oxygen available in small portable cans that allow you to flood your body with high amounts of oxygen at any time, which can have a dramatic impact on your recovery.

200-year-old shipwreck found in Gulf of Mexico

An oil company exploration crew's chance discovery of a 200-year-old shipwreck in a little-charted stretch of the Gulf of Mexico is yielding a trove of new information to scientists who say it's one of the most well-preserved old wrecks ever found in the Gulf.
"When we saw it we were all just astonished because it was beautifully preserved, and by that I mean for a 200-year-old shipwreck," said Jack Irion, maritime archaeologist with the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in New Orleans.
Video shows muskets and gin bottles littering the Gulf bottom, along with sea life mingling in the wreck.
Scientists say the ship is about 200 miles off the northern Gulf coast and about 4,000 feet deep. The depth has kept it largely undisturbed during two centuries of storms and hurricanes. And although most of the ship's wood dissolved long ago, the copper hull and its contents remain in place.
"The wood is deteriorated. It's largely been eaten away by marine organisms, but what is left is a copper shell which would have been the lower part of the hull which was sheathed in copper to protect it," Irion said.
'Very few shipwrecks have been found that still have the stove intact.'
- Jack Irion, maritime archaeologist
Among the wreckage were "a rather astonishing number of bottles," particularly square gin bottles known as case bottles, as well as wine bottles, Irion said.
There were many ceramic cups, plates and bowls that didn't appear to be cargo. Some were green shell-edged pearl ware, a British import popular in the United States between 1800 and 1830.
The ship's kitchen stove was found intact.
"Very few shipwrecks have been found that still have the stove intact," Irion said. "You can very clearly see the features of the stove. It's in rather good shape."
Also discovered were an anchor, cannons and muskets. Irion said researchers have not yet determined whether it was a merchant, military or pirate ship.
There was plenty of pirate and military activity in the Gulf at the time, surrounding the War of 1812, the Texas revolution and the Mexican-American War. The buccaneer Jean Lafitte and other pirates sailed the Gulf to smuggle goods into New Orleans, Galveston, Texas, and elsewhere.
"It was actually a fairly hazardous place to be if you were a merchant ship, so it was not unlikely that you would be carrying a cannon on board to protect yourself," Irion said.
Researchers believe the ship likely sank during a storm.
"We haven't seen any evidence of burning, or explosions or cannon shot. That's obvious, so we strongly suspect that it was likely a hurricane or another strong storm and it simply foundered at sea and vanished without a trace and was never reported missing," Irion said.
The shipwreck site was noticed as an "unknown sonar contact" during an oil and gas survey last year by Shell Oil Co. Shell reported it to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, which teamed with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to survey the site.
The federal agencies used robots and high-definition cameras during a 56-day expedition by the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer that ended April 29.
The underwater video was transmitted live via satellite to maritime archaeologists, scientists and resource managers from Texas to Rhode Island.
BOEM is protecting and preserving the site until it's determined what country the vessel is from.
So far, none of the wreckage or cargo has been brought up -- and it might never be. The authorities want to explore as much as they can before making that decision.
Frank Cantelas, a maritime archaeologist for NOAA, said the site was one of four explored in the Gulf last month. He said the agency also intends to study the sea life at the site, because deep sea shipwrecks often serve as habitats for marine life.
Researchers wouldn't disclose the precise location of the wreck, citing concerns over possible plundering or disturbing the site.
"One thing that we want to stress is ships have a monetary value, but they also have to us a historical value that goes way beyond that," Irion said. "What this can tell us is a very interesting story about our past, about the history of the Gulf of Mexico, about how important the Gulf of Mexico was to the beginnings of the United States."
The wreckage can also give insight to the lives of the crew, where they had been, where they were going and their role in the economy and world history.
"It's as if we get a glimpse into what their lives were like, like a time capsule," Irion said.

Super Powerful Oxygen4Energy

Oxygen4Energy
It seems that every stimulant to help you gain energy and performance in your workout has drawbacks, either extra sugars which turn into fat or caffeine which leaves you out of energy faster once you’ve peaked. However, there is one source that runners, the bodybuilder and even those in search of hangover relief can turn to for an instant energy boost with no downsides. Oxygen4Energy uses pure oxygen to help increase your overall energy without any sugars, calories, side effects or crashing that is common with all other forms of stimulants.
Consider that oxygen4Energy introduces pure oxygen into your system that combines with glucose to create the primary source of energy for your muscles, ATP. The more ATP you have, the more powerful and explosive you will be which is great for workouts, jogging or other forms of physical exercise when your muscles need an added boost with no side effects to get the best results. Oxygen4Energy is the simple, easy to use substance that will help get you the results you need.
Breathing oxygen is natural and what we all do several times a minute every day of our lives. But our breathing oxygen is also combined with nitrogen and other elements in the air that reduce the effectiveness of getting the much needed oxygen into our bloodstream. Now consider a product that remedies that effect by proving a more pure form of oxygen that can be absorbed quickly and give us the boost we need when working out or providing the hangover relief after much needed exercise.
Oxygen4Energy helps supplement your muscles to what they need most, especially when working out. When you consider that if your muscles do not get enough oxygen, they start producing lactic acid which generates the feelings of fatigue. When you increase the oxygen content to your muscles the lactic acid slows down in production so you will experience less muscle fatigue. For the bodybuilder, runners, cross trainers and others who are engaged in an exercise routine, this means you can extend your workout longer and get even more out of it.
Not only does Oxygen4Energy help you during your workout, it also assists your muscles after you have finished by helping your liver to metabolize the lactic acid that was generated. Now your muscles can recover more quickly and you feel less fatigue after completing a grueling workout routine. No wonder so many top athletes use oxygen to help get the most out of their workouts. From swimmers to weightlifters to runners, Oxygen4Energy is the one, true boost to your workout that has zero side effects and helps you improve your overall performance and reduce the fatigue and muscle failure that commonly occurs.
You can find more information about Oxygen4Energy and the powerful effects it has at http://www.oxygen4energy.com/homepage3 and at http://oxygen2wealth.com/ Which show you just how oxygen is the choice of top level athletes as well as those just wanting to get into shape. Why wait? Relief from muscle fatigue and the pure performance boost is only a mouse click away

Oxygen4Energy: The Company.........

Oxygen4Energy: The Company
Oxygen4Energy is a new company so you won’t here a lot of success stories. The product however, is endorsed by some of the top athletes including Hall of Fame Bodybuilder Shawn Ray and the 2010 Masters National Champion 200m Sprinter David Jones. You will also find testimonials on the company website from pro athletes, sports and fitness lovers and everyday people. The company claims that portable oxygen in a can is destined to be the next bottled water. Furthermore, they claim that this is destined to be the next dominant product in the health supplement industry and if you get involved with the company now, you will be in position to capitalize on this growth.
Oxygen4Energy: The Product
The Oxygen4Energy product is tru02 oxygen enriched air and comes in a convenient sized lightweight can. They claim this could help athletes by allowing them to flood their body with supplemental oxygen anytime they need to and also have a dramatic impact on their performance. They also claim that seniors could benefit also by helping improve their lives by giving them the oxygen their bodies are craving. Their website clearly states that this product is “Not for Medical Use” and is not intended to treat, cure or prevent diseases. The product is currently shipped in the Continental U.S. by UPS Ground only because by law, tru02 cannot be shipped by air.
Oxygen4Energy: The Founder
After selling oxygen products for two years strictly through e-commerce, Oxygen4Energy founder Craig Inaba decided to join forces with the premiere oxygen in a can manufacturer in the U.S. owned and operated by Jeffrey L. Perlmutter. In case you were wondering, this is the guy that created a $500 million industry by pioneering the sport of Paintball. They decided that creating a New Network Marketing Platform would be the most effective way to get the product out to the consumer. By creating a multi-level business opportunity, they would have their members promoting the product as well.
Oxygen4Energy: The Compensation Plan
Oxygen4Energy offers a business opportunity for people to generate income by sharing the product with others. If you become an independent distributor you will receive these benefits. You can purchase the product for up to 49% off MSRP for resell or personal use. You will be able to earn profits from retail sells. You can earn 20% commission on any referred sales from your personal company website. You can also refer other distributors, build a team and earn commission on the sales generated by your entire team through unlimited levels. Does this company have what it takes for long-term industry success? In my opinion, the product is good and the potential is there, but as the old saying goes, only time will tell.
Oxygen4Energy: The Conclusion
Will you have success with the Oxygen4Energy opportunity? As I said before they do offer a personalized company website to help you promote the product. However, the company training is almost non-existent. You will need to know how to market  your new business. The health supplement industry is very saturated. If you can generate a steady flow of high quality leads and teach these leads duplication, success is possible. You will have to build a huge organization, and I do mean huge, in order to max-out the compensation plan. Building a business takes a lot of hard work, but if you stay focused, success is possible. So if Oxygen4Energy gets you excited, then by all means, go out and build yourself a legacy

What exactly is Oxygen4Energy?

What exactly is Oxygen4Energy? It's an innovative new multi-level marketing opportunity that just launched in January 2011. The company markets portable canisters containing 95% oxygen enriched air. Founder Craig Inaba was selling oxygen products for two years strictly though e-commerce and decided to join forces with the premiere canned oxygen manufacturer from the U.S. owned and operated by Jeffrey L.

The Oxygen 4 Energy product is tru02 oxygen enriched air and comes in a convenient sized lightweight can. The product is currently shipped in the Continental U.S. by UPS Ground only because by law, tru02 can not be shipped by air.

VO2max

Fitness can be measured by the volume of oxygen you can consume while exercising at your maximum capacity. VO2max is the maximum amount of oxygen in millilitres, one can use in one minute per kilogram of body weight. Those who are fit have higher VO2max values and can exercise more intensely than those who are not as well conditioned. Numerous studies show that you can increase your VO2max by working out at an intensity that raises your heart rate to between 65 and 85% of its maximum for at least 20 minutes three to five times a week. A mean value of VO2max for male athletes is about 3.5 litres/minute and for female athletes it is about 2.7 litres/minute.

Factors affecting VO2max

The physical limitations that restrict the rate at which energy can be released aerobically are dependent upon:
  • the chemical ability of the muscular cellular tissue system to use oxygen in breaking down fuels
  • the combined ability of cardiovascular and pulmonary systems to transport the oxygen to the muscular tissue system
Vo2max
There are various physiological factors that combine to determine VO2max for which there are two theories: Utilization Theory and Presentation Theory.
Utilization theory maintains that VO2max is determined by the body's ability to utilize the available oxygen whereas Presentation Theory maintains it is the ability of the body's cardiovascular system to deliver oxygen to active tissues.
A study by Saltin and Rowell (1980) [3] concluded that it is the deliver of oxygen to active tissues that is the major limiting factor to VO2max. A study by Gollnick et al. (1972) [4] showed a weak relationship between the body's ability to utilize the available oxygen and VO2max.

VO2max for various groups

The tables below, adapted from Wilmore and Costill (2005) [2], detail normative data for VO2max (ml/kg/min) in various population groups.

VO2max and age

As we get older our VO2max decreases. A study by Jackson et al. (1995) [5] found the average decrease was 0.46 ml/kg/min per year for men (1.2%) and 0.54 ml/kg/min for women (1.7%). The decline is due to a number of factors including a reduction in maximum heart rate and maximum stoke volume.

VO2max and performance

VO2max on its own is a poor predictor of performance but using the velocity (vVO2max) and duration (tlimvVO2max) that an athlete can operate at their VO2max will provide a better indication of performance.

VO2max evaluation tests

An estimate of your VO2max can be determined using any of the following tests:

Improving your VO2max

The following are samples of Astrands (a work physiologists) workouts for improving oxygen uptake:
  • (1) - Run at maximum speed for 5 minutes. Note the distance covered in that time. Let us assume that the distance achieved is 1900 metres. Rest for five minutes, and then run the distance (1900 metres) 20% slower, in other words in six minutes, with 30 seconds rest, repeated many times. This is equal to your 10 Km pace
  • (2) - Run at maximum speed for four minutes. Note the distance covered in that time. Rest for four minutes. In this case, we will assume you run a distance of 1500 metres. Now run the same distance 15% slower, in other words in 4 minutes 36 seconds, with 45 seconds rest, repeated several times. This approximates to a time between the athlete's 5 Km and 10 Km time
  • (3) - Run at maximum effort for three minute. Note the distance covered in that time. The distance covered is, say 1000 metres. Successive runs at that distance are taken 10% slower or at 3 minutes 18 seconds, with 60 seconds rest, repeated several times. This approximates to your 5 Km time
  • (4) - Run at maximum effort for five minutes. Note the distance covered in that time. The distance covered is 1900 metres. Rest five minutes. The distance is now covered 5% slower with one and a half minutes rest. This is approximately 3K pace for you, i.e., five minutes 15 seconds/1900 metres
  • (5) - Run at maximum effort for three minutes. The distance covered is 1100 metres. When recovered, the athlete then runs the same distance 5% slower, i.e., three minutes nine seconds/1100 metres, with one minute rest, repeated several times. This is at 3 Km pace

When and how often

It is suggested that in the winter sessions (1) and (2) are done weekly, and in the track season sessions (3), (4) and (5) are done weekly by runners from 800 metres to the half-marathon. Although it would be convenient to use the original distance marks made by the duration efforts, this does not take into account the athlete's condition before each session, so the maximum effort runs must be done on each occasion when they may be either more or less than the previous distance run. The maximum duration efforts are in themselves quality sessions. If the pulse rate has not recovered to 120 beats per minute in the rest times given, the recovery period should be extended before the repetitions are started. The recovery times between the repetitions should be strictly adhered to. These workouts make a refreshing change from repetition running. When all five sessions are completed within a month, experience shows substantial improvements in performance.

The effect of altitude

VO2 max decreases as altitude increases above 1600m and for every 1000m above 1600m maximal oxygen uptake decreases by approximately 8-11%. The decrease is mainly due to a decrease in maximal cardiac output (product of heart rate and stroke volume). Stoke volume decreases due to the immediate decrease in blood plasma volume.

VO2max Assessment

The VO2max assessment is based on the Cooper VO2max tables and comprises of the following grades: Very Poor, Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent and Superior.
For an evaluation of your VO2max select the age group and gender, enter your VO2max and then select the 'Calculate' button.

% MHR and %VO2max

It is possible to estimate your exercise intensity as a percentage of VO2max from your training heart rate. A study by David Swain et al. (1994) [1] using statistical procedures examined the relationship between %MHR and %VO2max. Their results led to the following regression equation:
  • %MHR = 0.64 × %VO2max + 37
The relationship has been shown to hold true across sex, age and activity.
